“Suicide as a Result of Political Persecution”

Commemorative stone marker for Captain Wolfgang Fürstner who built and organised the Olympic Village of the 1936 Olympic Games and was its first commander, then deputy commander. He committed suicide three days after the end of the Olympic Games having learned that according to the Nuremberg Laws he was classified as a “half-Jew” and was therefore to be dismissed from the army.

The Nazis buried him at the Invalids’ Cemetery, claiming he had been killed in a car accident, to cover up the reason for his suicide.

The stone was donated by the German National Olympic Committee and inaugurated in June 2002 by Professor Walter Tröger, former president of the German Olympic Committee.
